An Inclusive Playground is desperately needed in Del Rio, so all children can play together. So many of the children here are unable to participate in park activities because the equipment is inaccessible. The realization that there were no parks with playgrounds where special needs children could play alongside their able-bodied peers, sparked the dream to build a fully inclusive playground in honor of Nicky Peña. If you build it, they will come. Del Rio needs a place where ALL can play!

A bias-free community for people with disabilities.

Under the auspices of the Community Health Improvement Coalition (CHIC), we will work to create programs and environments that remove barriers for people with disability and improve the overall quality of life for people of all abilities through inclusion and education.

Universally Accessible/Inclusive Playground at Buena Vista Park: Through the collaboration of the City of Del Rio, we will build a playground that allows all people of all ability levels to play together. Parks are crucial to the health and well being of all people regardless of abilities or age. We are proud to announce that we have been awarded a grant from Shane's Inspiration, a 501(3)(c) non profit, whose mission is to "to create inclusive playgrounds and programs that unite children of all abilities." "It's A Beautiful Day" Festival for Special Needs Children was on March 17, 2011 at the Del Rio Civic Center. A major goal of this group is to create an annual event for children with special needs where their "disabilities can disappear!" A day focused on removing barriers for these special children and allowing them to "just be kids."
